What? Candida Actually BELONGS in the Gut?

Yes, Candida is a yeast that is a normal part of the gut microbiome.

Candida actually belongs in everyone’s gut microbiome. Some studies are being done to find out how it may actually be beneficial on some level.

Our gut is filled with lots of beneficial bacteria, which should make up the bulk of the organisms in there. Other species common in the human gut microbiome include archea, fungi, protozoa and nonliving viruses.

But these harmful microorganisms are usually only present in very small amounts and aren’t able to harm us. Like I said before, there’s a chance that in those small amounts, they may actually provide a beneficial service.

When does Candida become a problem?

Candida becomes a problem when it gets overgrown and fungal (no longer a yeast). Fungal Candida has a very strong biofilm that makes it resistant to many anti-fungal drugs and herbs. Fungal Candida also damages the lining of the intestine. This causes enhanced gastrointestinal permeability (leaky gut). Left un-repaired, leaky gut can lead to food sensitivities and later on, autoimmunity.

What causes Candida to become overgrown and fungal?

Candida becomes overgrown and fungal when we

  1. alter the gut microbiome by killing beneficial bacteria. This allows Candida to spread its wings, really stretch out, and multiply
  2. eat foods that encourage candida growth. Such foods include high sugar fruits, rice, bread, baked goods, candy, pasta, bagels, etc.

Killing beneficial bacteria doesn’t sound like a good idea. Am I doing that without knowing it?

Killing beneficial bacteria is NOT a good idea. It’s possible you’ve been doing it without knowing it for a long time.

Here are some things many of us do on a regular basis that are not aimed at killing beneficial bacteria, but definitely still has that result.

Steroid use (most commonly: nasal steroids for allergies or sinus infections)

Oral birth control

Antibiotics

NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Aspirin (brand names include Bayer, Bufferin, and Ecotrin, St. Joseph), Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox DS, Naprosyn), Celecoxib (Celebrex)

Non-organic foods (foods sprayed with pesticides)

PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) – these do not directly kill beneficial bacteria, but do encourage Candida overgrowth. For a deeper dive on PPIs, CLICK HERE.

Can you fight Candida with diet alone?

You know what? Sometimes you CAN fight Candida with diet alone.

Just a couple things:

  1. If you have such a small overgrowth of Candida that you can fight it with diet alone, you probably aren’t aware of your overgrowth. By the time most people are aware of their Candida overgrowth, it’s too far gone to fight with diet alone.
  2. Fighting Candida with diet alone takes a lot longer.

Some people choose to fight it with a no sugar, high nutrient diet and lots and lots of garlic. This can work, but it’s going to take about 2 years. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to eat NO SUGAR AT ALL for 2 entire years!

And wouldn’t be a bummer to fight like that for 2 whole years just to find out that you’ve made no progress because the particular Candida strain in your body is resistant to garlic? This can happen! True story!
